Traditional Ragdoll Cat Breed Overview

Timeless Elegance. Unmatched Affection. The Classic Ragdoll.

The Traditional Ragdoll is the original, iconic version of the breed—known and loved for its gentle nature, striking blue eyes, and plush colourpoint coat. Developed in the 1960s by Ann Baker in Riverside, California, the Traditional Ragdoll remains one of the most popular and beloved cat breeds worldwide.

At Mountain Hollow Ragdolls, we proudly breed pure Traditional Ragdolls, continuing the legacy of this exceptional and affectionate feline companion.

What is a Traditional Ragdoll?

Traditional Ragdolls are the foundation of the breed. They are born pure white, with their point colouration developing gradually over the first few weeks of life. Their soft, semi-long coat and captivating blue eyes give them a regal, yet endearing appearance.

They come in a variety of recognised patterns and colours, including:

  • Patterns: Colourpoint, Mitted, Bicolour, Lynx, Tortie

  • Colours: Seal, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Flame, Cream, and more

Appearance

Trait Traditional Ragdoll
Birth Colour Pure white at birth
Coat Development Point colours emerge gradually with age
Eye Colour Always vivid blue
Coat Texture Silky, semi-long, and low-shedding
Size Large and muscular with a soft, floppy build

Temperament

The Traditional Ragdoll is best known for its sweet, gentle, and relaxed nature. Often referred to as a “puppy-cat,” this breed is highly people-oriented and thrives on companionship:

  • Calm and affectionate

  • “Floppy” when held—hence the name “Ragdoll”

  • Great with children, seniors, and other pets

  • Quiet, intelligent, and eager to please

  • Best suited for indoor living where they can be pampered and loved

Cherubim (Mink) Ragdoll Cat Breed

Bridging the Gap Between Tradition and Genetic Truth

As Ragdoll breeders, maintaining integrity and a thorough understanding of the breed is essential, not only for registration and reputation but for guiding prospective kitten owners with confidence. One of the most misunderstood yet genetically legitimate lines within the Ragdoll breed is the Cherubim Ragdoll, often referred to as the Mink Ragdoll.

Cherubim Ragdolls are not a different breed. They are purebred Ragdolls descended directly from the original lines created by Ann Baker in the 1960s. In fact, Ann registered multiple expressions of the Ragdoll, including Traditional (blue-eyed, pointed), Mink (Cherubim), Solid, and Sepia—under her IRCA registry.

Cherubim Ragdolls differ from Traditional Ragdolls only in their coat and eye colour expression:

  • Born with visible colour (unlike pointed kittens, which are born white)

  • Aqua or blue-green eyes (rather than vivid blue)

  • Richer, deeper coat tones with a luxuriously soft, velvet-like texture

Cherubim Ragdolls carry one copy of the pointed gene and one of the solid gene, making them genetically heterozygous for colourpoint. This results in:

  • Colour at birth (due to the solid gene influence)

  • Diluted or blended point markings

  • Eye colour that is a mix between blue (pointed) and green/gold (solid)

They are not a mixed breed or “half Ragdoll,” as is sometimes wrongly assumed.

While major show registries like CFA currently recognise only Traditional Ragdolls for championship showing, registries such as ANCATS (Australia) accept Cherubim/Mink Ragdolls as fully purebred and eligible for registration and effective May 1st 2025, TICA now officially recognize Mink, Sepia and solid Ragdolls as a new breed called Cherubim. This change comes from the need to distinguish certain Ragdoll cats from the established breed standard. Many breeders around the world ethically breed both Traditional and Cherubim Ragdolls within the same program, maintaining excellent health and temperament standards.

It’s important to educate clients and the breeding community about this broader genetic diversity rather than perpetuating the misconception that only blue-eyed pointed cats are “real” Ragdolls.

The essence of the Ragdoll breed isn’t just in its blue eyes or pointed coat, it’s in the temperament, the gentleness, and the unshakable bond these cats form with their people.

By recognising the Cherubim Ragdoll as a legitimate and valuable part of the breed’s history and future, we as breeders can uphold the spirit of Ann Baker’s vision while continuing to evolve ethically and inclusively.

Traditional and Cherubim are both pure Ragdolls but there are a few differences between them.

  • Cherubim Ragdoll kittens are born with colour
  • Traditional Ragdoll kittens are born white and are the classic blue-eyed, colourpoint Ragdoll

Cherubim Ragdolls come in the following

    • Mink – Rich, velvety coats and Aqua or blue-green eyes

    • Solid – Even colour from head to tail with striking green, gold, or copper eye tones

    • Sepia – Deeper hues with a dense, plush coat, with gold, green, or hazel eye tones

The point colour of the Cherubim is much richer and darker than the point colour of the traditional Ragdoll.

Cherubim ragdolls come in all the standard colours of :

  • Seal
  • Blue
  • Cream
  • Blue/Cream
  • Chocolate
  • Lilac
  • Flame
  • Tortie

and also come in all the standard patterns:

  • Colourpoint (no white)
  • Mitted (white mitts on front paws, boots on back legs, white chin and bib)
  • Bi-color (inverted “V” on face, white on all legs, chin and bib)
  • and Lynx.

Mink Ragdolls have blue/green coloured eyes, the Traditional Ragdoll will always have Vivid blue eyes only.

Most importantly, Cherubim ragdolls have the same characteristics as traditional Ragdolls. They are large, lovey, docile, floppy, puppy cats.

  • Ideal for families, children, and other pets

  • Best suited to indoor living

Cherubim Sepia Ragdoll Cat Breed Overview

Luxurious Depth. Classic Temperament. Truly Distinctive.

The Cherubim Sepia Ragdoll is the deepest-toned and most richly coloured variation within the Ragdoll breed. As part of the Cherubim family—alongside Mink and Solid Ragdolls—Sepias offer a uniquely striking appearance while retaining the same affectionate, laid-back temperament that defines the Ragdoll breed.

At Mountain Hollow Ragdolls, we are proud to raise and educate about this rare and elegant variation, offering families the opportunity to welcome a truly special companion.

Sepia Ragdolls are a variation of the traditional Ragdoll with two copies of the sepia gene, resulting in the darkest and most velvety coat of all Ragdoll types. They are born fully coloured, with deep, uniform coats that intensify with age.

While their colouration sets them apart, Sepia Ragdolls are purebred, tracing back to the original lines developed by breed founder Ann Baker. They are considered part of the Cherubim classification, a term originally used by Baker to describe her non-traditional Ragdoll lines.

Temperament

Despite their dramatic appearance, Sepia Ragdolls share the exact same gentle, affectionate nature as their Traditional cousins:

  • Exceptionally people-oriented and social

  • Calm and floppy when held—true to the Ragdoll name

  • Intelligent, curious, and emotionally intuitive

  • Excellent with children and other pets

  • Thrive as indoor companions and love to follow you around

Are Sepia Ragdolls Purebred

Yes! Sepia Ragdolls are genetically purebred and originate from the same bloodlines as Traditional Ragdolls. The difference lies in colour expression, not breed legitimacy. They are simply another beautiful expression of the Ragdoll’s genetic diversity, acknowledged by respected bodies like ANCATS and TICA.

Why Choose a Sepia Ragdoll?

If you’re drawn to the classic Ragdoll personality but desire a cat with:

  • Deeper, richer colouring

  • A velvety-soft coat

  • And a truly unique appearance that turns heads

…then the Cherubim Sepia Ragdoll may be your perfect match.
